The Most Exciting 2-Player Card Games to Challenge a Friend

Card games are popular for a reason, one of which is that they offer endless amusement to everyone. Even if you’re only limited to two players, there are many options. Which is the best, though? Check out our list to find out!

German Whist

The first game on our list is German Whist, which is played through trick-taking. The objective is to win tricks by playing a card and having the highest value among your opponents. Since most card games in the trick-taking genre require more than two players, German Whist is a rare exception that suits two players perfectly.

In this game, the initial face-up card is determined to be the trump suit for the hand. After that, each player is dealt with 13 cards. In turn, players will play a card to decide who wins the top card of the stock. Meanwhile, the loser will get the face-down card beneath it. In this way, each player receives a replacement card for each trick, with the winner leading the next one.

Once the stock is exhausted, the players will make their hand of 13 cards, and the player who gets the most tricks from the 13 tricks wins the game. What makes German Whist better than other trick-taking games is that these are fast-paced with an air of mystery since neither player knows what the face-down cards will be. A bit of adjustment is highly recommended.

Cribbage

The next game on our list is Cribbage, one of the most challenging games on this list. It has a confusing scoring system and even more confusing game mechanics, but its popularity has grown since its inception in the 1600s due to the iconic Cribbage board used to keep scores. As long as the players master its quirky rules, they’ll certainly have a lot of fun.

How to play Cribbage:

  • Players get a starting hand with six cards each, with two cards for each hand put face-down to make the “crib.”
  • Each will take turns playing one card while keeping track of their combined value, until a player can’t play a card without going over 31.
  • The cumulative count starts over once the value of 31 is reached.
  • Scores are given to players who can bring the value to exactly 15 or 31.
  • Card combinations are also given points.
  • The goal is to be the first player to gain 121 points.

Playing Cribbage online is the best option for new players who haven’t heard of the game yet. With the advent of technology, a physical Cribbage board and pegs are not required since you can always download an app to keep track of your scores.

Gin Rummy

A popular card-matching game that belongs to the Rummy family is Gin Rummy. Out of Rummy’s countless variations, Gin Rummy is the ultimate crowd favorite due to its simple game mechanics that involves drawing, laying off, and discarding cards. At the same time, players will try to create melds of three or more cards that consist of cards of matching values or consecutive values.

At the beginning of the game, each player will be dealt ten cards. The objective is to create runs and sets of cards, which are kept in the player’s hands until the end of the game when a player knocks. During a player’s turn, they will get the top card of the draw pile or the face-up card from the discard pile.

Scores are earned depending on how many melds a player has made. Court cards are worth ten points, while others are worth their face value. Over multiple rounds, a particular score is set. If a player achieves or exceeds that, then they win. Better practice your Gin Rummy skills to get the upper hand!

Golf

A casual and more lighthearted card game on our list is Golf. The name is based on the fact that the game is played as nine “holes,” in which the aim is always to get the lowest cumulative score.

How to play Golf:

  • The game begins with each player given six cards that will be played face-down in a grid that consists of two rows of three cards.
  • After the cards are set, each player will turn the cards face up.
  • The goal for the players is to have the lowest total value of cards visible by the time all cards are face-up.
  • If two cards match, they cancel each other out, while Kings are counted as zero, and 2s give minus points.
  • During a player’s turn, they can either get a card from the face-up draw pile or the top card of the face-up discard pile.
  • The cards drawn will either be discarded or used to replace one of the cards in their grid, so that card is sent to the top of the discard pile.

Golf has many variations, but the six-card game can deliver the ultimate experience. Although the game is ideal for two players, three-player versions also exist. However, the best way to play is to have only one opponent!
