Can you divorce in Skyrim?

You’re living your life to the fullest, having adventures and testing out new things. Before you know it, you’re stuck in a loveless marriage because you were young and stupid, and you didn’t know any better.

Just so we’re clear, I’m talking about marrying in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

You’ve grown tired of your spouse, and you see many new, better partners that you could’ve married, only wishing now there was some way you could get a divorce and get yourself a better-looking partner.

I’m still talking about Skyrim, guys.

You wouldn’t be the first Skyrim player to learn the concept of marriage and quickly run around to find yourself a partner, only to realize later you could’ve settled for better.

I know many people who waste their Bond of Matrimony on Lydia… I mean, dude, she follows you around everywhere and is “sworn to carry your burdens” what more could you want from her?

Unfortunately, I was one of those players who married Lydia, and since Day 1 of the marriage, I wanted to get out of it. I looked up everywhere to see how I could divorce my wife in Skyrim, and this is what I found out:

Can you divorce in Skyrim? Well, Yes and No. While the game doesn’t provide options or dialogues to get a divorce officially, there are many workarounds to getting a divorce in Skyrim and remarrying. You can either kill your spouse, utilize console commands, or download and install mods to get rid of your spouse and marry a new one.

There are a few ways you can get rid of your partner in Skyrim; they include:

1.       Killing them

2.      Using console commands

3.      Modding your game

In this guide, I’m going to play the role of your Skyrim divorce lawyer and help you get a divorce from your husband/wife in Skyrim WITHOUT losing half of your property, so read on.

Wait! Before you read on, have you exhausted every quest in Skyrim? Are you tired of the same old dungeons, draugrs, and dragons? It may be time to set sail for new adventures. Can You Get A Divorce In Skyrim?

Marriage is a beautiful thing, but divorce feels even more beautiful when you’re with the wrong person.

If you were excited the moment you got to know you could marry in Skyrim and rushed into marriage with the first person you could find, only to regret it later, then fret not!

You can get a divorce in Skyrim by the following three methods.

  • Kill Your Spouse:

What do you do when you can’t muster up the courage to tell your wife you need a divorce? Take her to a secluded place and kill her, of course! (Please go back and read the title; THIS METHOD IS NOT APPLICABLE IN REAL LIFE… or is it? 😉

While Skyrim doesn’t believe in divorce and remarriage, so you need to go around utilizing bugs to get a divorce. When you kill your wife in the game, it will take 24 hours to reset your status to Widowed/Single.

Make sure to sneak while killing your spouse in Skyrim and hide the body in the basement of your house to ensure you don’t get a bounty (This sounds so wrong).

You can, later on, sell the Bond of matrimony and the amulet of Mara to start your life as a bachelor once again.

If you don’t want to get your hands dirty, you can always make your spouse your follower and lead them to a dungeon.

Don’t defend them as the waves of Draugrs attack. After taking a nasty beating, your spouse will die, and you’ll be free from the chains of matrimony.

While this is one of the simplest ways of divorcing your spouse, this will lead to the end of that NPC, and if the NPC is required for a quest, you’ll either fail the quest or the NPC will be immortal, i.e., you won’t be able to kill them.

If your spouse is immortal, fear not, for there are two more ways of getting a divorce in Skyrim. Read on.

  • Using Console Commands:

If you want to get a divorce within seconds, you can simply use cheats, and your partner will be on their way (it works in real life as well).

The cheating I’m talking about is cheat codes/console commands. You can open the console in-game via the ` or \ key and write the following commands:

  • removefac 51596
  • removefac C6472
  • resetquest 74793
  • resetquest 21382
  • setstage 74793 10

Once you press Enter and close the console command, your spouse will move out of your home and walk away from you.

You can sell the Bond of matrimony and the amulet of Mara (provided they don’t disappear on their own), and you’ll be a single Dragonborn!

  • Using Mods:

The best part about gaming on a PC is the enhanced graphics and the amazing mods. Skyrim has been a well-known playground for modders from all around the world to pitch in and experiment.

You can download and install the divorce mod for Skyrim; you can simply initiate a dialogue and divorce your spouse to marry someone else. This is one of the easiest methods of all.

Can You Remarry In Skyrim?

The primary reason why one would divorce their spouse in Skyrim is that they have been eyeing another NPC for marriage. While Skyrim doesn’t allow multiple marriages (it doesn’t even allow divorce officially but ah, well), you can still ditch your spouse for someone else. Here’s how:

  • You can use the above methods for divorcing your spouse and wait for 24 in-game hours.
  • After the time has passed, check your inventory for the Amulet of Mara and the Bond of Matrimony in your list of items.
  • If you have these in your possession, then go sell them at any store.
  • Go and speak with Maramal in Riften to purchase another Amulet of Mara.
  • Wear the necklace and approach the NPC of your choice to get married to them, redoing the whole sequence you did before.

Your spouse will now move in with you in your home, and you can live with them without a mention of your ex. You can also adopt children and get your spouse to follow you as a follower on your quests.
