How to acquire a display case

If you have the Hearthfire DLC, you can craft a display case using the carpenter’s workbench in your home. To do this, you will need to have a copy of the “Display Case” blueprint, which can be purchased from a steward or obtained as a reward for completing certain quests.

Display cases can hold any number of items. I placed this axe manually in this display case.

Display cases are an incredibly popular addition to many homes in Skyrim, and they are available for purchase in a variety of styles and sizes. From simple, utilitarian cases to ornate and elaborate designs, there is a display case to fit any home’s aesthetic. Not only do they add a touch of sophistication to any room, but they also provide a great place to showcase items of personal significance, such as trophies and artifacts from your adventures in the land of Skyrim.

How to Use a Display Case

There are three ways to use display cases in Skyrim:

  • Place items manually in display cases in your homes.
  • Place small items into display cases as part of the Hearthfire DLC
  • Download a mod that lets you place (nearly) any item inside a display case.

In this section, I’ll have a look at all 3 options.

Using Display Cases in Skyrim manually.

Using Display Cases in Skyrim can be a great way to showcase your hard-earned items and trophies that you have gathered from your adventures throughout the vast world of Tamriel. Not only can they provide a great visual representation of what you have accomplished, but they can also act as a reminder of the trials and tribulations that you faced to get to where you are. Display cases can be found in a variety of locations throughout Skyrim, and it is up to you to find the right one for your needs. To use them manually, you will need to find the appropriate display case and open it up, allowing you to choose which item to place inside. Once your item is inside, the case will be locked and you will be able to admire your hard-earned item. Display cases can also be used to store items that you may not wish to use at the moment, but may still have some value. This makes them an ideal choice for storing important items or trophies, as you can easily access them at any time without having to worry about their safety.

I dropped this axe manually into this display case using the E key.

However, manually storing items comes with a few issues. For starters, items have to be manually placed inside the display case while it is open. This can be a bit of a headache, as even though you can pick up any physical item in Skyrim and swing it around, there is no way to manually orientate the item. As a result, you are relying on luck for the item to be placed correctly in an open display case.

Secondly, items have a terrible habit of falling through the display case model and through the world’s floor, consigning your item to eternal oblivion. An item has to be just the right size to fit in the display case. If the item is too long or too thick, when you close the lid, the physics system will break and the item will spasm around randomly for a few seconds before being forced out of the display case. This can be especially frustrating when the item is of a unique size and shape, making it difficult to find a display case that is suitable for it. Furthermore, even if the item does fit in the display case, it’s still a risk that the item could be bumped or moved in such a way that causes the lid to close and the item to be expelled. This is why it’s important to always double check that the item is securely placed and not in danger of being dislodged by any external force.

After I have dropped an item, I can hold E to lift the item without putting it into my inventory.

Lastly, display cases are not classified as safe storage. That means that, after a few in-game days, the display case will repopulate its original contents. This act of repopulation has the unfortunate side effect of permanently deleting anything that was stored inside the display case at the time of repopulation. So be extra careful before placing items inside random display cases.

As a general rule of thumb, if you buy a house, all the storage within that house is safe storage.

If you wish to use a display case manually, follow this process.

  1. Save your game. You don’t want to lose your favorite items.
  2. Open The display case. Remove any items inside.
  3. Open your inventory, and find the item you wish to put into the display case. Drop the item on the floor.
  4. Exit your inventory and locate the item on the floor.
  5. Now leave the area (so you get a loading screen).
  6. Go back to the area where you dropped the item.
  7. Point your reticule on the item and hold the action key down (E key on PC, A on Xbox, X on PS4/5). If you’d like to change the item’s orientation, pick it up from a different angle as it will be stuck at the angle you pick it up.
  8. While keeping the action key held down, you should now be able to pick up the item.
  9. Lift the item into the air and place it inside the display case.
  10. Look around the display case to make sure the item is full inside the case. Ensure the item is not thicker than the case.
  11. If you are happy, close the display case’s lid. If everything goes well, the item should be sitting snuggly inside the display case.
  12. The item will start shaking or bouncing around inside the display case if something goes wrong. It may be expelled from the display case, or even the world altogether. If this happens, reload your save and start the process again.

Hearthfire Display Case.

Another way to use Display cases in Skyrim is to use the display cases that you can build as part of your buildable homes.

Once you have acquired a display case in the Hearthfire DLC, you can use it to place small weapons such as daggers, inside. Unlike manually placing items, these display cases can be activated, allowing you to automatically place an item.

You need to make sure items placed into a display case actually fit.

To add a dagger to a display case, do the following.

  1. Select the display case using the action button.
  2. Your inventory will open with all your items listed. Highlighted items can be placed in side the display case.
  3. Once you have selected an item, it will be removed from your inventory and placed in the display case.
  4. You can rearrange the items within the case by activating it and using the rotate and position options in the menu. To remove items from the case, select them and choose the “Take” option.

Use a mod to put an item in a display case

If you are looking for a way to use display cases in Skyrim, you may want to consider installing a mod. Mods are user-created modifications that can be installed to enhance your game experience. Installing a mod will add new features, items, NPCs, and other content to the game.

One popular mod for enabling usable display cases for Skyrim is the HearthFires Display Case Fix SE. This mod lets you place larger items into some of the larger display cases in homesteads throughout Skyrim. The display cases can be used to show off your most prized possessions, or to keep weapons and armor organized.

Follow this method to use the Creation Club Display Case fix mod, so you can use your display cases to show off larger items.

  1. First go in game and remove any items yuou have manually placed in display cases.
  2. Exit Skyrim and Install Nexus’ Vortex mod manager. You’ll find detailed instructions on how to install Vortex on the Vortex page.
  3. Download the mod here.
  4. Install the mod using Vortex. You can find detailed instructions.
  5. Enable the mod.
  6. Load up your save game.
  7. Interact with any display case in your Hearthfire homes.
  8. You should now be able to place larger items in your Display cases.
