Is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Worth Playing and Why?

In the vast kingdom of gaming, every title is a quest, a journey that beckons players to embark on. One such quest that has caught the attention of many is “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity”. The question that arises, like a puzzle waiting to be solved in a Zelda dungeon, is whether this game is worth playing. Let’s delve into the heart of the game and uncover the reasons that make it a worthy adventure.

Engaging Gameplay and Unique Mechanics

A game’s worth is often measured by the strength of its gameplay and mechanics, much like a hero’s worth is measured by the strength of their sword. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, in this regard, is a masterfully crafted blade.

Solid Combat Mechanics

The combat system in Age of Calamity is a symphony of swordplay and strategy. It’s a dance of destruction that keeps you on your toes, offering a variety of characters, each with their unique fighting styles and abilities. This variety adds depth to the gameplay, ensuring that each battle is a new experience, a fresh challenge to overcome.

Based on my personal experience of playing the game, I found the combat in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity to be more engaging and fun than the combat in Breath of the Wild or Tear of the Kingdom.

Don’t get me wrong, I acknowledge that the combat in those games is superb, from the perfect shield block to jumping out of the way at the last second. The combat in Breath of the Wild was so good that they hardly had to change it for TotK.

However, all of the fantastic elements that made the combat in those games great were included in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. But they added so much more the elevates the combat.

The combat in Age of Calamity is much faster, and there are far more moves, longer and better, and more complex combinations of attacks. There are special moves that have screen-filling effects that look fantastic and make you feel incredibly powerful.

To me, the combat in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is head and shoulders above that found in the other Zelda games on the Switch. My only wish is that I could transplant the combat from Age of Calamity to Breath of the Wild and TotK.

Engaging Progression System

The progression system in the game is akin to a well-plotted quest, filled with twists and turns. It cleverly adapts the vision of Hyrule from “Breath of the Wild”, making it a joy to play and discover. The game’s progression system is engaging, rewarding players for their efforts and keeping them hooked, much like a captivating side quest that you can’t help but complete.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity offers a more engaging RPG-style progression system. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the simplicity of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. However, I also love a good RPG, and although the RPG elements in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity are very light, they do exist and add an extra layer of complexity to the game that I enjoy.

Unique Perspective on the Zelda Timeline

Understanding a game’s place in a series timeline can be as tricky as navigating a dungeon filled with puzzles. However, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity offers a unique perspective on the Zelda timeline, making it a treasure trove of lore for fans of the series.

Prequel to Breath of the Wild

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity serves as a prequel to “Breath of the Wild”. It offers players a chance to revisit characters and places from the last Zelda game, adding depth to the overall narrative of the series. This connection to Breath of the Wild makes the game a must-play for Zelda fans, like a hidden side quest that reveals more about the main story.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is not considered canon within the universe of Zelda. Even though it is positioned as a sort of prequel to Breath of the Wild, essentially, the ending of Age of Calamity doesn’t fit with the beginning of Breath of the Wild’s story, so both games cannot be true.

Breath of the Wild has been established as canon within the Zelda universe, so Age of Calamity cannot be due to this contradiction. However, I cannot stress enough that even though this game is not canon, it is still worth playing.

A Unique Narrative

The game offers a unique narrative on the events leading up to the calamity, providing a deeper understanding of the Zelda universe. It’s like finding a hidden lore tablet in a forgotten corner of a dungeon, offering insights that enrich the overall gaming experience.

How Does the Gameplay of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Compare to Other Games in the Series?

Comparing games in a series is like comparing different types of potions, each has its unique properties and effects. When it comes to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, the gameplay stands out in the Zelda series.

Hack-and-Slash Meets Strategy

Unlike the traditional action-adventure gameplay of the Zelda series, Age of Calamity introduces a unique blend of hack-and-slash and strategy. It’s like combining a powerful sword with a strategic battle plan, resulting in a gameplay experience that is both thrilling and thought-provoking.

Varied Roster of Characters

Another unique aspect of Age of Calamity is the varied roster of characters. Unlike other Zelda games where Link is the main character, Age of Calamity allows players to control a variety of characters from the Zelda universe, each with their unique abilities and playstyles. It’s like having a full inventory of different weapons, each offering a unique way to tackle challenges.

What Unique Features Does Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Offer?

Every game is a unique artifact, offering its own set of features and experiences. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is no exception, offering a treasure chest of unique features that enhance the gaming experience.
