What is a Werewolf in Skyrim?

A werewolf is a mythical creature that is said to be able to transform from a human form into a wolf-like creature. In Skyrim, werewolves are described as humans infected with the Lycanthropy disease, a special type of disease that grants them extraordinary powers.

Werewolves in Skyrim are humanoid creatures that are able to transform from their human form into a wolf-like creature. In their wolf form, werewolves possess powerful, muscular bodies with fur ranging from light brown to black. They have long snouts, sharp teeth, and piercing yellow eyes. Additionally, werewolves in Skyrim are often larger and more muscular than their human form, granting them enhanced strength and speed.

How to Become a Werewolf in Skyrim

Becoming a werewolf in Skyrim is no easy task and carries with it a variety of risks and consequences. However, it can also be a rewarding and powerful experience, granting access to a range of unique abilities and a unique culture and history. If you’re ready to take the plunge, follow the steps below to become a werewolf in Skyrim.

  1. Join The Companions. The first step to becoming a werewolf in Skyrim is to join the Companions, a guild of warriors based in Whiterun. After joining, you’ll need to complete the questline until you reach the point where you’re asked to take the “Silver Hand” test.
  2. Take the Silver Hand Test. The Silver Hand test requires you to track down and kill a werewolf. Once you have done this, you will have to drink from a sacred fountain, at which point you will be infected with the Lycanthropy disease.
  3. Accept the Curse of Lycanthropy. After you have been infected with the Lycanthropy disease, you will have a choice to make. You can either accept the curse and become a werewolf, or you can reject it and remain human. If you choose to accept the curse, you will be transformed into a werewolf at the next full moon.
  4. Embrace Your New Life. Once you have accepted the curse and transformed into a werewolf, you’ll need to embrace your new life. As a werewolf, you’ll have access to a variety of powerful abilities and a unique culture and history. You’ll also have to abide by a certain code of honor and be prepared to face the prejudice of those around you.

Benefits of becoming a werewolf in Skyrim.

Becoming a werewolf in Skyrim can provide a variety of benefits, including:

  • Max health is increased by 100 (non-regenerating) As a werewolf in skyrim, players will experience an increase in their maximum health of up to 100 points. However, it is worth noting that this additional 100 health points will not regenerate if depleted. This boon is especially useful for those who frequently wade into combat in the frozen wastes of Skyrim, as it helps to ensure that their character can withstand more damage.
  • Max stamina is increased by 100. As a werewolf, the player is granted a range of powerful abilities, such as increased stamina. This can be increased up to 100 points, providing the player with improved efficiency and the ability to perform tasks for longer periods of time. Additionally, it allows the player to explore the world of Skyrim more quickly and access more areas and experiences. This increased stamina is especially useful in combat, granting the player the endurance to battle longer and more intensely in Tamriel.
  • Faster sprint speed. As a werewolf in Skyrim, you’ll have access to a range of unique and powerful abilities, one of which is a dramatically increased sprint speed – one that is far faster than that of any horse! This increased speed gives you a significant advantage in combat, allowing you to quickly close the distance between you and your foes, or to make a speedy getaway when the situation calls for it. Furthermore, it also provides you with an invaluable tool for exploration and travel, allowing you to traverse the vast reaches of Skyrim in a fraction of the time it would normally take your human form.
  • Wolves no longer attack you. As a werewolf in Skyrim, you no longer have to fear being attacked by wolves. Now, thanks to your transformation, they will no longer be a threat to you. You are now part of their pack, and they will recognize and respect you as one of their own.
  • Committing crimes while in beast form does not count against your record in human form. As a werewolf in Skyrim, it is possible to commit crimes in beast form without it counting against your normal form. It is a unique advantage that only werewolves in Skyrim possess, and can be used to your advantage in some situations. No bounty will be placed on your human head for committing crimes while in werewolf form.
  • You have immunity to all diseases, including vampirism. It also cures vampirism if you have it. As a werewolf in Skyrim, you will be immune to all diseases, including vampirism. In addition, if you are already a vampire, you can cure yourself of vampirism by turning into a werewolf. This is a great advantage, as it allows you to experience the benefits of being a werewolf while still avoiding the drawbacks of being a vampire.
  • You get access to Werewolf Perks. These Perks include: Screenshot 2022-12-29 at 10.35.29.png
  • Power attacks while sprinting as a werewolf cause enemies smaller than dragons (including mammoths) to ragdoll. Honestly, it’s incredibly funny to see mammoth flailing across the floor after sprinting power attack blow.
  • Access to Werewolf Specific shouts and spells.
  • Frenzy attack (hold down attack)
  • No weight encumbrance As a werewolf in Skyrim, you don’t have to worry about the weight of your equipment. This is because you don’t have any weight encumbrance, meaning you can move freely and quickly without having to worry about being slowed down by your gear. However, it is important to note that you cannot pick up any items or open any containers when you are in werewolf form. This means that you will have to rely on your enhanced strength and speed to progress in your quests.
  • Slight increase to vertical/horizontal leap. Nothing too drastic here. I read about this on Reddit and a few other forums, but when I tested it myself I didn’t notice a difference. However, given your powerful, muscular werewolf form, it would make sense if you could jump further.
  • Skin Spells still have effect on werewolves*:* Werewolves are unarmored, so spells like Dragonhide remain effective if cast before transformation. However, they cannot be recast while in Beast Form.

Drawbacks of becoming a werewolf in Skyrim.

While there are many benefits to becoming a werewolf in Skyrim, there are also some drawbacks to consider. These include:

  • No looting (when a werewolf) As a werewolf in Skyrim, you are unable to loot chests or bodies for items or gold. This can be a major drawback for those who rely on looting for items and resources, as it limits the amount of items and gold you can acquire. Furthermore, it can also make certain quests more difficult, as it limits your ability to collect the items you need to complete them.
  • You cannot access the Inventory menu. As a werewolf in Skyrim, you cannot access the inventory menu to adjust your character’s inventory and items in the same way you can as a human. This makes sense, as werewolves don’t have the same level of control over their abilities as humans do. I believe Bethesda chose to limit players’ access to the character menu to fully simulate the feeling of being out of control as a werewolf.
  • No talking to people or NPCs as a werewolf in Skyrim As a werewolf in Skyrim, you are unable to communicate with NPCs or other humans. This is because, as a werewolf, you lack the ability to speak in a human language. This can be a significant disadvantage for those who rely on talking to NPCs in order to progress in quests and storylines, as it can limit your access to certain items and information.
  • People either run away from you, cower, or attack you. When in werewolf form in Skyrim, people will often react to your presence in one of three ways: running away from you, cowering in fear, or attacking you. This is due to the fear and mistrust of werewolves that is prevalent in the world of Skyrim. As a result, making any meaningful connections with other characters in the game can be difficult, as they will be wary of your presence and may even try to attack you. Ultimately, it is important to remember that being a werewolf in Skyrim carries a number of burdens. Having people fear you is one of them.
  • If someone sees you transform, it’s automatically a crime and 1,000 gold bounty. If somebody witnesses you transforming into a werewolf in Skyrim, it will be recorded as a crime and you will instantly receive a 1000 gold bounty against your name. This is a steep price to pay for your transformation, and it can be especially punishing for those who are discovered in public places or in front of important NPCs. As such, it is important to take caution when transforming in public or in the presence of NPCs, as the consequences can be severe. Take a look at my how to remove bounty guide, if you find yourself with too much bounty and enough cash to pay it off.
  • No rested bonus. Werewolves in Skyrim are unable to benefit from rest or sleeping bonuses, even if they are in their normal, human form. This means that if you are a werewolf, you will not be able to gain any additional experience points or other bonuses from sleeping or resting.
  • Silver weapons do slightly more damage. Silver weapons have an increased effect on werewolves in Skyrim. Due to their heightened sensitivity to silver, werewolves take more damage when struck by weapons made of the metal. This can be a major disadvantage in combat, as it makes it more difficult for werewolves to defend themselves against silver-wielding enemies. Furthermore, it can also make it more difficult to progress in certain quests and storylines, as some bosses are known to wield silver weapons. As such, it is important for werewolves to be aware of the increased damage they will take from silver weapons.
  • Unequips all equipment. When you transform into a werewolf in Skyrim, all of your equipped equipment will automatically be unequipped. This means that any armor, weapons, and other items you have equipped will no longer be available in your werewolf form. This can be a significant disadvantage in combat, as it limits the amount of protection and damage you can inflict. You also lose any passive abilities granted by your equipment. It is important to note that the unequipping of equipment is not optional and cannot be prevented, so it is important to take the necessary precautionary measures before transforming into a werewolf.
  • Using spells, shouts, or powers (other than the werewolf-specific ones) is impossible. As a werewolf in Skyrim, you are limited to using Werewolf specific shouts and spells. This means that you cannot use any regular spells or shouts. However, you do have access to a range of unique and powerful abilities, such as the Werewolf Perks, Power attacks while sprinting, Frenzy attack, and Skin Spells. These abilities can be incredibly powerful but cannot be used alongside conventional spells or shouts.
  • Inability to return to human form. Once you have become a werewolf in Skyrim, there is no way to transform back to your normal human form. Instead, you must wait until the transformation wears off naturally. This can be a difficult and frustrating process, as you will have to remain in your werewolf form for several in-game hours. So you should plan what you are going to do as a werewolf accordingly.
  • Forced third-person view. You are forced to use a third-person camera view when you play as a werewolf in Skyrim. This means that instead of being able to view the game world from a first-person perspective, you must instead view your character from a third-person perspective. This can be a jarring experience for those used to playing in first-person, as it can take some time to get used to the new view. Furthermore, it can also make it more difficult to navigate the world and complete certain tasks, as it can be harder to judge the distance and position of objects in the game world. Ultimately, it is important to be aware of this when playing as a werewolf in Skyrim, as it can significantly impact your gameplay experience.
  • Transformation takes a few seconds, during which you may be injured or killed. Transforming into a werewolf in Skyrim can be risky, as it leaves you vulnerable for a few seconds while the transformation takes place. During this time, you may be attacked and killed, making it important to be aware of your surroundings and to take precautions before transforming. As such, it is important to remember that transforming into a werewolf in Skyrim is not without risks, and should be done with caution.
  • You have to eat peoples’ or animals’ hearts to gain power. In order to gain power as a werewolf in Skyrim, you must consume the hearts of animals or people. It is a risky proposition, as it requires you to hunt and kill creatures in order to gain the hearts you need. Sounds easy right? you are a werewolf after all. Well, from my experience of playing as werewolf, you can actually be killed quite easily in combat.
  • You can’t pick locks when transformed. Unfortunately, as a werewolf in Skyrim, you are unable to pick locks. This is due to the lack of control you have over your abilities in werewolf form, and the fact that werewolves do not possess the same level of dexterity as other species in Tamriel.
  • You get wider when transformed. Werewolves in Skyrim are large, meaning that passing through narrow doorways can be a challenge. To get through, you will either have to back through such doors or walk in backwards through the door. Don’t ask, it just works.
  • The number of orders that can be issued to a follower is reduced. Followers cannot collect any items while you are in your werewolf form. They will merely interpret your orders as a command to “move there”.
